Lightning is a flat plug blade with eight contacts on each face, and the device works out which way round it is. The cable end usually has a small chip that identifies it, which is how iPhones detect uncertified cables.
Data runs at USB 2.0 speed on iPhones. Fast charging needs a USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB PD charger.
