Can DisplayPort 1.4 do 4K at 144 Hz?

AnswerYes, if…

Yes, with DSC. Uncompressed, DisplayPort 1.4 (25.92 Gbps) tops out at 4K 120 Hz in 8-bit and about 97 Hz in 10-bit. 4K 144 Hz 10-bit needs 39.19 Gbps, so it relies on Display Stream Compression. Nearly every 4K 144 Hz monitor and every GPU from roughly 2019 on supports DSC. Without DSC, older monitors fell back to 4:2:2 colour above 120 Hz.

How the numbers are worked out

Reduced-blanking timing (VESA CVT-R2)

3840×2160 active → 3920 × 2314 total pixels per frame

3920 × 2314 × 144 Hz = 1306.21 MHz pixel clock

1306.21 MHz × 24.0 bits per pixel = 31.35 Gbps

8-bit colour, full RGB/4:4:4: 3 × 8 = 24.0 bits per pixel.

"Has" is the link's usable rate after line coding. DSC is modelled as up to 3:1 compression. Full method.

Use a DP8K-certified cable: HBR3 is where uncertified cables start to fail, and it shows up as flicker or a black screen only at the highest refresh rates. If your GPU or monitor doesn't do DSC, set 120 Hz for full colour, or accept 8-bit 4:2:2 at 144 Hz, which blurs coloured text slightly but is invisible in games.
