Watch out for

  • macOS does not do MST daisy-chaining on its own ports.

DisplayPort 1.2 sends packets over four lanes at 5.4 Gbps each (HBR2). With 8b/10b coding that leaves 17.28 Gbps, enough for 4K at 60 Hz (12.54 Gbps with reduced blanking) with room to spare, and for 1440p at 144 Hz.

It also introduced Multi-Stream Transport (MST), which lets one port drive several monitors by daisy-chaining or through an MST hub. The monitors share the 17.28 Gbps. Macs do not support MST on their own ports, so they show the same image on chained screens or nothing at all.

What it can carry

Computed from each link's usable bandwidth; 4K at 60 Hz and above assumes 10-bit HDR colour. How.
